Abstract
Past and contemporary views of airway smooth muscle (ASM) have led to a high level of understanding of the control and intracellular regulation of force or shortening of ASM and of its possible role in airway disease. As well as the multitude of cellular mechanisms that regulate ASM contraction, a number of structural and mechanical factors, which are only present at the airway and lung level, provide overriding control over ASM. With new knowledge about the cellular physiology and biology of ASM, there is increasing need to understand how ASM contraction is regulated and expressed at these airway and system levels.Mesh:
