Reversal of bilateral rosette cataracts with glycemic control.

Hema Ramkumar1, Surendra Basti.

Abstract

This case describes a diabetic with blood glucose levels in the 400s for 3 weeks with severe loss of visual acuity over the past 2 weeks. The exam showed only feather-shaped opacities in her lens, consistent with a cataract. With insulin and fluids alone, her visual acuity dramatically improved and her cataract reversed within 2 weeks. Glycemic control is effective and preferred to surgical intervention for acute hyperglycemia-induced cataracts.
