INTRODUCTION: Numerous questionnaires have been developed to assess function in activities of daily living. One of these was developed by the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America (POSNA) and is known as the PODCI (Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument). This instrument has been translated to Spanish but had not been validated in a normal Mexican population. OBJECTIVE: To validate the translated version of the PODCI when applied to a population of Mexican adolescents without any orthopedic condition and obtain reference scores to be considered normal. METHODS: The questionnaire was applied to 87 adolescents and their parents; range, mean, 95% confidence intervals and standard deviation were determined for each scale. RESULTS: High scores were observed for all scales, the lowest mean was 87.2 and the highest was 99.9. No significant difference was noted between the questionnaires answered by the adolescents or their parents. CONCLUSIONS: The translated version of the PODCI was validated in this population. We determined that the maximum score of 100 is obtainable and we can infer that an adolescent who scores below 80 is functioning at a level that is lower than normal.
