Abstract
Evidence supports the central role of endothelium and inflammation in all phases of the atherosclerotic process. Clinical studies have shown their prognostic potential for the development of ischaemic events and for adverse outcome after acute coronary syndromes. Reduction in inflammatory levels and improving endothelial function by traditional and novel treatment strategies were associated with a proportional reduction in cardiovascular events. However, randomised controlled trials are required to explore further whether drugs targeting the inflammatory process and endothelial function will constitute a reasonable adjunctive treatment for patients with coronary artery disease.Entities:
