Postmastectomy reconstruction of the breast using the latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap.

Dennis C Hammond1.

Abstract

Reconstruction of the breast after mastectomy must be both safe and effective in providing long-term results for patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer. By using several strategically designed technical modifications in the elevation and transfer of the latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap, outstanding results can be obtained when this method combines with the use of prosthetic devices in the form of tissue expanders and implants. The morbidity associated with the procedure is low, and the operation is well tolerated by even in the presence of adverse risk factors, such a smoking history, obesity, or medical illness. This procedure is presented as an excellent option for those patients who present for breast reconstruction after mastectomy.
