| CRITERIA FOR NEWBORN SCREENING |
|---|
Treatment has to be available Early institution of treatment before symptoms manifests has been shown to reduce the severity of the illness Routine observation and physical examination will not reveal the disorder and so a test is required A rapid and economical laboratory test is available that is highly sensitive and specific The condition is frequent and serious enough to justify the expense of screening (cost-effectiveness) The social infrastructure is in place to inform the newborn's parents and physicians of the results of the screening test, confirm the test results, and institute appropriate treatment and counseling |
