Making a difference: why perianesthesia nurses must be involved in the policy and political process.

Judith K Leavitt1.

Abstract

Perianesthesia nurses have a unique focus on the health care system that affords them the opportunity to provide critical information to policymakers tackling a mirage of complex health issues. An in-depth understanding of politics and the policy development process is necessary for successful participation in the political process. This article provides an overview of policy development and the political process. Issues of particular interest to perianesthesia nurses are explored, and strategies for more participation in the political process are provided.
