Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The high cost of critical care resources has resulted in strategies to reduce the costs of ruling out low-risk patients by developing intermediate care units (IMCs). The aim of this study was to compare changes in total hospital costs for intensive care patients before and after the introduction of an IMC at the University Hospital Maastricht.Entities:

The P value concerns the differences between pre-IMC and IMC periods. The P value interaction tests whether the differences of studied relevant factors change from the pre-IMC period to the IMC period. In both tests, 10log-transformed costs were analysed. ICU, intensive care unit; IMC, intermediate care unit; LOS, length of stay; SD, standard deviation; TISS, Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System.
Results of final model multiple regression analysis total cost per stay as a 'dependent' outcome variable

aP values within brackets should not be taken into account as the predictors involved are also present in an interaction effect. Predictors before the arrow have a score of 0, those after the arrow have a score of 1. In the test, 10log-transformed costs were analysed. ICU, intensive care unit, IMC, intermediate care unit; LOS, length of stay, TISS-28, Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System with a median value of 28.
