Abstract
Intravenous therapy is a crucial and indispensable aspect of nursing practice in acute settings, and is expanding into community care. Peripheral venous cannulation is a common intervention and carries inherent risks to patients. This article explores preventative and risk-management aspects relating to peripherally-inserted cannulae, focusing on insertion, short- and longer-term risks. Assessment aspects should also encompass staff knowledge and competence, and regular maintenance of practice. Proactive measures are proposed to assess and manage the care of the patient and their device. Staff issues are also considered and measures discussed. Finally, ongoing review of the need for a cannula is essential to ensure appropriate and safe patient care.Entities:
