Abstract
Most diagnostic tests used in medicine, science, and technology are nonbinary: they are based on quantification of a variable that has a range of possible values. In this article, the authors describe how such tests are designed and characterized. They shall use the concepts developed here in future articles that describe how diagnostic techniques are operationalized for clinical settings.Mesh:
