Abstract
BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is considered as an important outcome parameter in patients with chronic diseases. This study aimed to assess the role of disease-specific HRQL for long-term survival in patients of different diagnoses with chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure (CHRF).Entities:

Data are shown as mean ± SD. Characteristics of patients with COPD were compared with those of patients with other diseases using the unpaired t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, or Fisher's exact test. P-values for individual tests were *p < 0.05; **p < 0.017 (corresponding to an overall p < 0.05 using a Bonferroni correction for three comparisons); ***p < 0.001. Definition of abbreviations: COPD = chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; RD = restrictive disease; NMD = neuromuscular disease; OHS = obesity-hypoventilation syndrome; OL = overlap syndrome: BMI = body-mass index; HMV = home mechanical ventilation; Hb = haemoglobin; FEV1 = forced expiratory volume in one second; IVC = inspiratory vital capacity; PaO2 = arterial oxygen tension; PaCO2 = arterial carbon dioxide tension; BE = base excess. Blood gas parameters were obtained while patients were breathing room air (n = 147) or their usual oxygen flow (n = 84).

Definition of abbreviations: SRI = Severe Respiratory Insufficiency Questionnaire; COPD = chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; RD = restrictive disease; NMD = neuromuscular disease; OHS = obesity-hypoventilation syndrome; OL = sleep apnoea syndrome. Mean values and SD of HRQL are given, and differences between COPD and the other groups were compared by the t-test, as values were normally distributed within groups. *p < 0.05; **p < 0.017 (overall p < 0.05 according to Bonferroni correction); ***p < 0.001.
