Abstract

BACKGROUND AND
PURPOSE: Until now, open colposuspension has been the gold standard in the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence. However, the open procedure is associated with more complications and longer hospital stays and is hard to justify given the availability of minimally invasive alternatives. We report two cases of robotic colposuspension performed for genuine stress urinary incontinence at our institution. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two multiparous women age 42 years and 53 years with urodynamically proved genuine stress urinary incontinence underwent robotic colposuspension. An extraperitoneal four-port technique was used. Three sutures were placed between the paravaginal tissues and Cooper's ligament on each side using the square-to-slip-knot technique, and the tension was adjusted appropriately.
RESULTS: The average operating time was 145 minutes. The average blood loss was 15 mL. The total hospital stay was 2 days in one patient and 7 days in the other. At follow-up 6 and 12 months later, both patients are continent.
CONCLUSION: If the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System is available, a robotic colposuspension may be regarded as an effective surgical treatment for patients requiring anti-stress incontinence surgery.
