Abstract
Bullectomy for giant bullae, lung volume reduction surgery, and lung transplantation are three surgical therapies that may benefit highly selected patients with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In this article, each procedure is reviewed, with an emphasis on guidelines for patient selection and clinical outcomes for the practicing pulmonologist. Recent results from the National Emphysema Treatment Trial, updated International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Registry data, and revised guidelines for patient selection for lung transplantation are discussed.Entities:
