Abstract
Mitochondria have a low affinity for Ca(2+), but they take up these ions during normal cell activity because they are in close proximity to the sites of calcium entry into the cell and of internal Ca(2+) release. This gives mitochondria privileged access to cytoplasmic Ca(2+) without requiring a direct communication with the endoplasmic reticulum.Entities:
