Abstract
BACKGROUND: Long waiting times for elective surgical treatment threaten timely care provision in several countries. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of waiting for elective general surgery on the quality of life and psychosocial health of patients.Entities:

**For analysis, the responses for category 1 ('some problems'/'moderate') and category 2 ('extreme' or 'unable to') were combined to indicate 'a problem' as opposed to response category 0 ('no problem'). This was done because the number of participants in response category 2 was too small to analyse separately. The effect of waiting on problems with self care was not analysed as the number of patients with problems on this dimension was too small
