Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder characterized by the progressive destruction of articular cartilage. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) constitute a major group among the neutral proteinases that degrade the extracellular matrix of cartilage, including various types of collagen, and aggrecan. Various MMPs are highly produced in synovial fluid and in sera from patients with RA, and are reported to play a pivotal role in cartilage matrix degradation in RA. In this review we describe the members of the MMP family and their basic function, and discuss their role in cartilage destruction in RA.Entities:
