[Telling patients about serious disease: the case of cancer].

Sidonie Nahum1.

Abstract

Stages of communication: prepare the patient before the diagnosis - suggest that the disease may be serious, know how the patient wants to be told. Prepare the announcement as soon as the diagnosis is certain - choose a quiet, private setting, have a therapeutic plan ready and explore alternatives. Tell and support the patient - announce the news clearly and simply, accept and handle the emotional reactions, provide support and be available.
