Abstract
The incidence of chickenpox and its complications is high enough to favour introducing varicella vaccination into the Dutch immunisation programme for children, although current Dutch figures may even underestimate the incidence. Safe and effective MMRV vaccines, in which varicella (V) vaccine is combined with measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), could well replace the MMR vaccine used at present. MMRV vaccines should be administered subcutaneously in two doses. Ten years after the introduction of varicella vaccination in the United States of America, the incidence of complications has decreased impressively. An effect on the incidence of herpes zoster has not (yet) been seen.Entities:
