Figure 1Pao2 and alveolar to arterial gradient for O2(A-aD levels of recipients in the 3 groups. Time course of Pao2 and A-aDo2 values before transplantation (before Tx) to 6 hours after ligation of the right pulmonary artery and the right bronchus in group 1 (filled circles), group 2 (filled triangles), and group 3 (open circles) is shown. Each group consisted of 5 animals. Significant differences in Pao2 levels were observed among the groups (overall group effect, P = .001, group 1 vs group 2, P = .001; group 2 vs group 3, P = .028). Significant differences in A-aDo2 values were observed among the groups (overall group effect, P =.003; group 1 vs group 2, P = .002).

Figure 2The histopathologic appearance of the graft from the 3 groups is shown. Group 1, A moderate number of isolated single neutrophils are present, mainly within alveolar capillaries (upper). Perivascular edema is not evident (lower). Group 2, A substantial increase in the number of neutrophils present in the alveolar wall is seen (upper). In addition to diffuse alveolar edema, alveolar exudates, and hemorrhage, perivascular hemorrhage is also observed (lower). Group 3, Neutrophil infiltration is markedly attenuated. There are no alveolar exudates and hemorrhage (upper). There is mild edema but no hemorrhage in the perivascular space (lower).
