Sisters in support together against substances (SISTAS): an alcohol abuse prevention group for Black women.

Karen McCurtis Witherspoon1, Alesia Williams Richardson.

Abstract

This paper examines the existing literature for alcohol abuse prevention and treatment of African American women and offers a group counseling intervention to address the culturally specific needs of this population. The group, SISTAS: Sisters In Support Together Against Substances, includes a curriculum that focuses on key components such as spirituality, self-esteem, racial identity, social support and intimate relationships. The purpose of the group is to raise awareness of and educate members about the factors that can lead African American women from drug abuse to dependency.
