New surgical approach for migraine.

Zhaomin Fan1, Zhong Fan, Haibo Wang.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To introduce a new procedure for the treatment of intractable cases of migraine. STUDY
DESIGN: To eliminate the excessive vascular and nervous effect by ligation of superficial temporal artery and middle meningeal artery and severance of greater superficial petrosal nerve.
RESULTS: A total of 10 patients with cases of severe migraine underwent the surgery. A follow-up of 2 to 18 years showed no recurrences. Among the patients, three were living and well for more than 10 years.
CONCLUSION: With an extradural approach, the procedure is relatively safe and simple. It stands as a good alternative for the treatment of intractable cases of migraine.
