Abstract
This review article provides insight into the evolution of professional healthcare chaplaincy. It identifies key historical developments identifying the training, qualifications, and competencies of chaplains. Consideration is given to both the unique character of the pastoral role in healthcare as well as the contribution of chaplains to the interdisciplinary care of patients and families. The article points to the emerging need for chaplains to pursue research within the clinical context.Entities:
