The effects of xylazine hydrochloride on intrauterine pressure in the cow.

M M Leblanc1, J A Hubbell, H C Smith.

Abstract

The effect of xylazine on bovine intrauterine pressure was studied in the diestrous and estrous cow. Ten milligrams of xylazine and 50 units of oxytocin were administered intravenously to 11 diestrous and 8 estrous nonlactating Holstein cows after an intrauterine catheter was placed per vaginam. Xylazine produced intrauterine pressure responses which did not differ statistically from those seen with oxytocin. Intrauterine pressure increased and waves of contractions were observed within 1.5 min after administering xylazine and oxytocin to estrous and diestrous cows. The pharmacological basis for the oxytocic-like action of xylazine is presently unknown.
