Abstract
The complete nucleotide sequence of a cDNA clone representing the segment 5 RNA of epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) United States serotype 1 was determined. The 5' and 3' termini of the RNA are complementary and are capable of forming secondary structures. The comparison of the predicted amino acid sequence of the encoded outer capsid protein (VP5) with the sequences of VP5 from four serotypes of bluetongue virus, the prototype orbivirus, revealed that the protein shares 59% to 62% homologies with various BTV serotypes, including a single conserved glycine residue at the amino terminus.
