Athletic trainers can impact health promotion and disease prevention.

K S Courtney1.

Abstract

With increasing numbers of athletic trainers working in nontraditional settings and the recognition of athletic trainers as allied health professionals, it is important that athletic trainers be knowledgeable about the health risks facing the nation in the 90s. Healthy People 2000: National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives contains 300 health objectives for the nation for the year 2000. Athletic trainers have a unique opportunity to assist other health professionals in implementing these health objectives and improving the quality of life of the citizens of the United States. In this article, I present a sample of the 300 health objectives for the nation and make suggestions regarding how athletic trainers can assist in the achievement and implementation of the objectives.
