Excision of heterotopic bone around the elbow.

Heterotopic ossification about the elbow is common and sometimes contributes to a disabling loss of motion. The traditional trepidation and pessimism regarding surgical excision of heterotopic bone is giving way to a realization that operative treatment is successful in most cases and dramatic functional improvements can be obtained. Familiarity with extensile exposure and operative technique will increase the safety and efficacy of the procedure.
