The process of empowerment: a parish nurse perspective.

Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe the services of parish nurse empowerment, of client empowerment and empowerment outcomes for nurses and clients.
METHOD: A sample of 28 parish nurses participated in one of three focus groups. Based on analysis of qualitative data from focus group discussions, empowerment themes were identified for nurses and clients.
FINDINGS: Six items were identified as sources of parish nurse empowerment and client empowerment.
CONCLUSION: The study showed that empowerment is a reciprocal process between the parish nurse and clients characterized by recognition of a higher power. IMPLICATIONS: To practice in a holistic manner, the spiritual dimension of person is a critical element of care.
