Abstract
Transdermal drug delivery is becoming a widely used tool in the pharmaceutical industry. Many factors can influence the transdermal flux of medication from a transdermal drug delivery system. The recently described skin physiology of lamellar bodies and skin responses to occlusive dressings provide new insights into transdermal drug delivery. This paper reviews the literature on occlusive dressings and lamellar bodies as it relates to transdermal drug delivery. An understanding of the physiology of lamellar bodies is important to understand and improve transdermal drug delivery.Mesh:
