World Health Organization Case Definition for Suspected and Probable Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
| • Any patient with a fever > 38°C (104°F) |
| • One or more symptoms of a lower respiratory tract illness, such as a cough, difficulty in breathing, or shortness of breath |
| • Having had close contact with an individual believed to have SARS or to have traveled to a region where there has been documented transmission of the disease |
| • No alternative diagnosis can fully explain the illness. |
| • An individualmeeting the criteria for a suspected case along with radiographic features of pneumonia or respiratory distress syndrome |
| • An individual with an unexplained respiratory illness resulting in death whose autopsy results demonstrate the following pathologic feature: respiratory distress syndrome without an identifiable cause. |
