Abstract

BACKGROUND: Congenital cartilaginous rests of the neck (wattles) are very rare, probably branchiogenic malformations.
OBJECTIVE: To discuss the clinical and histologic features and the therapy of wattles.
METHODS: We report a 4-year-old patient with symmetric exophytic nodules of the neck that had been present since birth.
RESULTS: The two lesions, 0.5 3 0.5 cm, were removed. The histopathologic examination confirmed ectopic cartilaginous tissue.
CONCLUSION: Wattles must be excised, including their cartilaginous core, after having sonographically excluded fistulae or sinuses.
