Abstract
Valproic acid (VPA) has been demonstrated to be able to inhibit histone deacetylase activity and to synergize with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) in inducing the differentiation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. A pilot study of the VPA/ATRA combination was performed in 11 elderly patients with de novo AML (median age, 82 years). Complete marrow response was observed in 3 patients, including 1 complete remission. Two additional patients had hematologic improvement.Entities:
