Abstract
For over 30 years, investigators have explored islet transplantation as a logical approach to restoring glucose homeostasis in persons with diabetes. Islet transplantation can currently provide improved glycemic control, relief from recurrent severe hypoglycemia, and potentially insulin independence. In this review, we describe details of the evolution of modern islet transplantation and provide insight into ongoing clinical and basic research efforts to overcome current obstacles for this promising therapy.Entities:
