Abstract
During the past 20 years, advances have been made in Crohn's disease and chronic ulcerative colitis. Despite impressive progress, it is still necessary to call these diseases 'idiopathic', as the details of their etiology remain obscure. Four areas will be reviewed in this article: genetics; intestinal inflammation; the relationship between the gut flora and the mucosa; and medical therapy.Entities:
