Abstract
Epididymitis, or epididymo-orchitis, and infected hydrocele are unusual in the neonatal period. It is critical to differentiate them rapidly from testicular torsion to salvage the affected testis and avoid unnecessary surgical exploration. Escherichia coli is an important gram-negative bacteria causing diverse neonatal infections and is also the common bacteria causing epididymo-orchitis from an ascending route. We report the case of a preterm infant affected with epididymo-orchitis and infected hydrocele caused by early-onset E. coli sepsis. We highlight the importance of sampling proper cultures and using suitable antibiotics after excluding testicular torsion in a neonate with an acute scrotum.Entities:
