Family involvement: are we asking too much?

Polly Lee1.

Abstract

Family involvement has evolved with the child's parents and family now having a much greater presence at their child's hospital bedside. This has caused some problems due to children's nurses misunderstanding what family involvement is, and assuming that parents want to be involved in their child's care. Greater negotiation and recognition that each child and family is unique, with unique health and social care needs, will be required in future to ensure that families are offered family involvement at an appropriate level.
