Abstract
Early accounts of eye dominances are considered. An index of sighting dominance (eye closure) was described by Aristotle, and Porta (1593) introduced an alignment test for it. Porta also described rivalry dominance, and asserted that it favoured the right eye. Acuity dominance, on the other hand, was assigned to the left eye by Borelli (1673). These views are placed in the context of prevailing theories of binocular vision.Entities:
