Abstract
A characteristic retinopathy associated with a poor prognosis has previously been described in African children with established cerebral malaria. However, relatively little is known about retinal abnormalities in children with severe non-cerebral malaria, the group most at risk of developing the cerebral complications of this disease. In this study the prevalence, pattern, clinical significance and accessibility to clinical examination of this characteristic retinopathy are described in 106 Gambian children admitted consecutively to hospital with severe malaria, including six with established cerebral malaria.Entities:
