Irritable bowel syndrome: assessment and management.

In this article the author discusses irritable bowel syndrome--a chronic, debilitating and functional disorder. The management of irritable bowel syndrome is based on treating the symptoms, rather than cure. Nurses in both hospital and community settings are in a good position to provide support, information and continuity of care for patients with this condition.
