Abstract
Alongside other risk factors for the development of type 2 diabetes, the presence of severe mental illness is often overlooked. A person with schizophrenia has a two to four times greater risk of developing diabetes than the general population and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is between 15 and 18% in the schizophrenia population.
