Neck school: cervicothoracic stabilization training.

T Sweeney1.

Abstract

This chapter introduces the concept and basis of cervicothoracic stabilization training (CTST). Traditionally, the patient with cervicothoracic pain has been treated with cervical collars, cervical traction, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, soft tissue massage, and joint mobilization. Although these techniques may form an integral part of the early treatment process, they also rely more heavily on the practitioner than on active patient participation. The primary goals of CTST are to maximize return to function, to limit progression of degenerative changes, and to prevent further injury.
