Abstract
People with dementia living in the community interact with a range of people who provide services to the public. Within these interactions, there may be communication problems associated with symptoms of the person's dementia. Problems include memory loss, difficulty communicating clearly, inability to grasp complex ideas, and problems handling money. This article describes a project that set out to promote training in dementia awareness for public contact staff with the expectation that it would help them better cater to people living with dementia. We worked with a police service, members of a city council, and staff of community pharmacies. This report provides suggestions about appropriate learning outcomes and program content and recommends steps to help others set up similar education programs.Entities:
