Current and emerging therapies for type 2 diabetes.

Jing Xu1.

Abstract

Diabetes affects approximately 150 million people worldwide, of which approximately 90% are type 2 diabetics. This article reviews the current and emerging therapies for type 2 diabetes and examines how these therapies affect the etiology and progression of the disease. Although current therapies can only at best delay the progression of type 2 diabetes, it is feasible to prevent pre-diabetics from developing the costly disease. Public awareness of the risk factors for and the symptoms of diabetes are crucial for its prevention and control.
