[Facial expression in severe dementia].

Little is known about emotions and facial expression in patients suffering from severe dementia. Therefore the facial expression of nine nursing home residents with severe dementia was videotaped in different emotionally relevant situations. The video clips were analyzed according to the Facial Action Coding System. The results show complex patterns of facial expression as well as individual patterns of facial movements.
