Abstract
BACKGROUND: In areas of high-level, year-round malaria transmission, morbidity and mortality due to malaria decrease after the first two to three years of life. This reduction may be related to the development of cellular immunity to specific antigens expressed in the different life-cycle stages of Plasmodium falciparum.Entities:

a Geometric mean P. falciparum density in each age group. b NS = not significant. P < 0.05 considered significant, as determined by χ2 test for homogeneity across age groups. c NS = not significant. P < 0.05 considered significant, as determined by analysis of variance (ANOVA) of log-transformed P. falciparum density across age groups.

a A positive response was defined as any response ≥ 20 pg/ml above that of unstimulated cell culture supernatants and had a positive or negative blood smear. b Geometric mean cytokine levels in pg/ml. c NS = not significant. P < 0.05 considered significant, as determined by χ2 test for trend across age groups. d P < 0.05 was considered significant as determined by analysis of variance of log-transformed values across age groups.
