Abstract
This article reviews the major approaches implemented during the last two decades to reduce sexual risk-taking behaviors, examines their evidence for success, and provides several recommendations for effective programs and program evaluations. This article does not discuss more broad-based sexuality education programs which address sexuality in a broader context. Instead, this article focuses primarily on programs that educators believed would reduce unprotected sexual intercourse. Keywords: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome--prevention and control; Adolescent Pregnancy; Adolescents; Age Factors; Americas; Barrier Methods; Behavior; Condom; Contraception; Contraceptive Methods; Contraceptive Usage--changes; Demographic Factors; Developed Countries; Diseases; Economic Factors; Family Planning; Fertility; Hiv Infections--prevention and control; Infections; Needs; North America; Northern America; Organization And Administration; Population; Population Characteristics; Population Dynamics; Premarital Sex Behavior--changes; Programs; Reproductive Behavior; Reproductive Tract Infections; Risk Reduction Behavior; School-based Services; Sex Behavior; Sexually Transmitted Diseases--prevention and control; United States; Viral Diseases; Youth
