SINGLE UMBILICAL ARTERY: A PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF 2000 CONSECUTIVE DELIVERIES.

J D CAIRNS, J MCKEE.

Abstract

A prospective study of 2000 obstetrical deliveries was undertaken to establish the incidence of single umbilical artery in the newborn and the frequency of congenital malformations reported to be associated with this disorder. Twenty cases of single umbilical artery were discovered; two proved to have an associated congenital malformation. In neither of these cases was medical management affected by the discovery of a single artery. In addition, the vascular arrangement in the cords of 31 concurrently occurring congenitally malformed babies was examined, and in no instance was a single umbilical artery found.
