Tryptophan- and indole-excreting bacterial mutants.

P G LIM, R I MATELES.

Abstract

Prototrophic mutants of Escherichia coli capable of producing indole and tryptophan were obtained by selecting for resistance to antimetabolites. An anthranilic acid auxotroph grown under conditions which would derepress the tryptophan synthetase system would also accumulate substantial quantities of L-tryptophan.
