Rural maternity care in Sierra Leone.

Abstract

The training and duties of a new category of health worker, the Maternal and Child Health Aide, is described. She is a literate women recruited from the place where she will eventually work. She has become the immediate supervisor of the traditional birth attendants (TBAs), who continue to conduct most deliveries in Sierra Leone.
