Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the caries-preventive effect of fluoridated milk after 10 years of consumption, including a two-year interruption. DMF mean values of 162 institutionalized children aged 7- to 14-years were compared to DMF mean values of 139 institutionalized children (control) of the same age. The test group children consumed 200 ml milk daily, implemented with 0.4 mg-to 0.75 mg F, depending on their age, continuously for six years. Following a two year interruption, the children again got fluoridated milk or cocoa-milk twice a week for four years. In the test group the average ratio of caries-free children was 10% more than in the control group. The caries prevalence in the permanent dentition showed a clinically and statistically significant reduction: 36.78% on DMFT, and 40.02% on DMFS mean values.
