Dongyan Huang1, Dongyi Han.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: In order to identify the different feathers of cholesteatoma of the middle ear between children and adults.
METHOD: We investigated retrospectively 35 cases (40 ears) of cholesteatoma in the middle ear of children, as well as 20 cases (21 ears) of adults. RESULT: The results revealed that cholesteatoma in children manifested more extensive distribution of lesion as well as more serious ossicular chain damage than those in adults. A statistically significant relationship was revealed between lesion extent and ossicular chain damage. Hearing level pre-operation and post-operation were similar.
CONCLUSION: Cholesteatoma is a more extensive and aggressive disease in the pediatric age group than in adults. Most children with an extensive disease require a CWD procedure. Hearing preservation depends on the extent of the disease, pre-operation hearing level and the surgical procedure chosen.
